God bless INXS but, boy, did they make a lot of mistakes. They were good enough to go down in history as one of the great bands of the '80s, in the stratosphere of U2, Depeche Mode, or Duran Duran; pure stadium-pleasing pop music, but with a little more rock credibility. Unfortunately, much of what they did traded art for commerce, and this live album, released when they were arguably at the peak of their popularity, was the nadir of their entire output. After building up a legendary live reputation after 10 years of working very hard, they crapped out this abomination of a live record that is taken from a variety of source nights and makes no strong argument for their live performance as it is fraught with overdubs and too heavy on weak songs from the X album instead of featuring true crowd pleasers. In a stroke of real perversity, a studio track was grafted into the middle of the proceedings and released as a single at the time; this song, "Shining Star," is a true throwaway with no melody and no real hooks. All things considered, the album hurt the band's career momentum forever in the U.S., although the album that followed (Welcome to Wherever You Are) renewed some of their critical reception and was reasonably successful throughout Europe.
